Since 2003, we have tested over 1000 adolescents in the Saguenay Lac-St.Jean region as part of the Saguenay Youth Study. This study, which your family participated in, examines the effects of maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy as well as environmental and genetic factors on health, using techniques including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). With your help, we were able to show, for example, that adolescents who were exposed to maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy do not differ from those that were not exposed in terms of their cognitive abilities (e.g., memory, visuo-spatial skills).
